Nourishing Dreams: Akshaya Patra’s 10-Kitchen Network in Andhra Pradesh

Providing nutritious school meals to thousands of children each day requires a well-coordinated system of procurement, preparation, quality management and distribution. In Andhra Pradesh, The Akshaya Patra Foundation operates a network of 10 centralised kitchens that support the delivery of school meals across the state.

From Visakhapatnam to Kalyandurg, these kitchens form an important part of Akshaya Patra’s efforts to support children through access to nutritious meals during the school day. Together, the 10 kitchens have a combined stated capacity of 193,000 meals per day.

A network built to support school nutrition

Akshaya Patra’s centralised kitchens are designed to prepare meals at scale while maintaining structured processes for food preparation and safety. The prepared meals are then transported to schools, where they are served to children during the school day.

The 10 kitchens in Andhra Pradesh were established between 2008 and 2022:

The combined stated capacity of the 10 kitchens is 193,000 meals per day.

From Visakhapatnam to Kalyandurg

The network began in Visakhapatnam in 2008, with a centralised kitchen capable of preparing 25,000 meals a day. It marked the beginning of Akshaya Patra’s kitchen network in Andhra Pradesh.

In 2015, Kakinada was added with a stated capacity of 15,000 meals per day. This was followed by Mangalagiri in 2016, which has the highest stated daily capacity among the 10 kitchens at 50,000 meals.

The Mangalagiri kitchen is also ISO 22000:2018 certified, reflecting the application of a structured food safety management system.

The network expanded further with Nellore in 2017, followed by Gudivada in 2018. In 2019, Akshaya Patra added four more locations: Gambhiram, Srikakulam, Kuppam and Ongole.

The most recent kitchen in this list is Kalyandurg in Anantapur, established in 2022 with a stated capacity of 5,000 meals per day.

Among the kitchens established in 2019, Kuppam, Srikakulam and Gambhiram are ISO 22000:2018 certified.

The role of centralised kitchens

A centralised kitchen is part of a larger operational system that enables meals to be prepared in substantial quantities and subsequently transported to schools.

The process involves multiple stages, including ingredient procurement, preparation, cooking, quality and food safety checks, packing and transportation. Each stage contributes to ensuring that meals are prepared systematically and reach schools as planned.

The scale of these operations is significant. A combined stated capacity of 193,000 meals per day requires coordinated teams, infrastructure and processes working together across different locations.

Supporting children through school meals

Akshaya Patra’s school meal programme is based on the understanding that nutrition and education are closely connected. A nutritious meal during the school day can contribute to creating a supportive environment in which children can participate in classroom and school activities.

For children, the meal served at school is more than a daily provision. It is part of their school experience and can support their nutritional needs while they continue their education.

This connection between nutrition and education forms an important part of Akshaya Patra’s broader mission to ensure that children are not deprived of educational opportunities because of a lack of food.

A growing network across Andhra Pradesh

The development of Akshaya Patra’s kitchen network in Andhra Pradesh over more than a decade reflects the expansion of its school meal operations across the state.

Each of the 10 kitchens has a different operational history and capacity, but together they form a network dedicated to supporting school nutrition.

With 10 centralised kitchens and a combined stated capacity of 193,000 meals per day, the network represents a significant operational infrastructure for delivering school meals across Andhra Pradesh.

Ultimately, behind every meal is a coordinated chain of people, processes and infrastructure. The purpose of this system remains straightforward: to help ensure that children have access to nutritious school meals and can participate in their education with greater support.

Ten kitchens. One coordinated network. One continuing mission to nourish children and support their journey through education.
