The Need for Holistic Child Development to Help Children Reach Their Full Potential
A good childhood lays the foundation to reach one’s full potential. While adequate nutrition is the cornerstone, it alone cannot guarantee holistic development. For this, children need access to quality education, a safe and nurturing environment, healthcare and opportunities to learn, play and develop social and emotional skills. Together, these factors determine children’s well-being and the adults they will become.
Holistic development for every child to reach their full potential
What Does a Child Need?
Children need multiple forms of support to grow healthy and empowered. This needs to be understood through three interconnected dimensions of child development.
- Physical Development
In a child’s body, physical changes occur constantly. From infancy through preadolescence, adolescence and puberty, the pace of growth is not uniform. The factors that influence this pace vary based on genetics, nutrition, environment and time. Nutrition is one of the most important external factors influencing physical growth. Studies have shown that adequate intake of proteins, vitamins, calcium and minerals support healthy growth and help children build stronger bodies.
- Cognitive Development
Children develop different mental abilities as they grow. During infancy, they begin to coordinate information from the senses such as touch, sound and sight, to understand the world around them. The brain develops faster during early childhood. By around age 3, it reaches about 80% of its adult size and 90% by age 5, even though the rest of the body is still growing and developing towards its adult form.
As they grow, their abilities become more complex. Toddlers begin to recognise familiar people and objects and understand simple cause-and-effect relationships. During the early school years, children gradually develop stronger attention, memory, language and problem-solving skills.
- Emotional and Social Development
While cognitive development is all about how a child thinks and learns, emotional development is about how a child understands and manages feelings. These emotional skills help them to cope with challenges, while social skills help them to communicate, cooperate and form meaningful relationships.
So, a nurturing environment from an early age is important to help them develop empathy, confidence, emotional regulation and build resilience when they face challenges.
Does Every Child Have What They Need to Thrive?
Many children from limited socio-economic backgrounds face circumstances that can affect their healthy development. Their family income, exposure to stress, housing conditions and access to healthcare influence how children grow, learn and cope with challenges.
Recognising these interconnected needs, The Government of India implements various programmes that support children’s health, nutrition, education and development, including:
- Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0
- PM POSHAN
Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0
Implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 bring together early childhood care, nutrition support and education through Anganwadi centres. Its beneficiaries include children below six years, pregnant and lactating mothers and adolescent girls in the age group of 14-18 years.
PM POSHAN
Implemented by the Ministry of Education, PM POSHAN provides nutritious mid-day meals to children in government and government-aided schools. Earlier known as the Mid-Day Meal Programme, the programme aims to improve the nutritional status of children, while encouraging regular attendance and active participation in school.
Turning Government Programmes into Ground- Level Impact
As an implementing partner, The Akshaya Patra Foundation supports The Government of India’s effort to improve children’s nutrition through programmes such as PM POSHAN and Mission Saksham Anganwadi and POSHAN 2.0. Under PM POSHAN, the Foundation currently serves nutritious mid-day meals to 2.35 million schoolchildren every day. Under the latter programme, it provides supplementary nutrition to pregnant and lactating mothers and toddlers through Anganwadi programmes.
Through its network of kitchens and feeding programmes, Akshaya Patra helps bring these government initiatives to children in schools and communities. By addressing nutritional needs at different stages of childhood, these programmes contribute to creating a stronger foundation for children’s health, learning and development.
Schools as Places of Holistic Development
After family, school is the place where children spend a significant part of their day. This makes school an important setting for addressing their diverse needs. The Mid-Day Meal Programme is one way schools can address a child’s nutritional needs and help reduce classroom hunger. Learning needs focus and focus needs energy. Nutritious food provides the energy children need to participate actively in classrooms. However, through nutritious meals alone one cannot overcome every challenge a child faces.
The World Around a Growing Child
Beyond meals and academic learning, schools can foster children’s physical, cognitive, emotional and social development. They frequently interact with their teachers and friends and engage in extra-curricular activities that give them opportunities to learn, communicate, collaborate and develop new skills. So, schools create an environment where children learn not only through their teachers but also from one another through interactions and shared experiences. Together, these forms of support contribute to a healthy, fulfilling childhood.
Many Hands for a Good Childhood
This is where the well-known saying, it takes a village to raise a child, captures an important truth: supporting children’s development is a shared responsibility. Families, schools, communities, governments and organisations all have a role to play in creating an environment where children are safe, supported and empowered to learn, grow and reach their full potential.
Help children become well-rounded individuals. When you donate to Akshaya Patra, you help us serve nutritious mid-day meals to 2.35 million and bring more children under PM POSHAN.
