What it Takes to Deliver Millions of Mid-Day Meals Every Day
Feeding millions of children freshly cooked, nutritious mid-day meals every day demands much more than large kitchens. For Akshaya Patra, an NGO in India, the success lies in a systematic approach driven by dedicated team members and the support of the government, corporate partners and individuals who share the organisation’s vision – No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger.’
Dedication, innovation and collaboration bring meals to millions
Over the years, the NGO has not only addressed classroom hunger but has also contributed to improving school attendance, retention and learning outcomes for children across the country. By ensuring access to nutritious meals, the organisation continues to support children’s educational journey and help build a stronger future for millions.
Akshaya Patra’s Meal Delivery System
For Akshaya Patra, precision, discipline and consistency are important at every level. As an implementing partner of The Government of India’s PM POSHAN (Mid-Day Meal Scheme), the NGO prepares meals on a large scale, adhering to the government’s nutritional guidelines.
Behind every meal served is a carefully coordinated system involving quality officers, trained kitchen staffs, logistics personnel, drivers and various other team members working towards to achieve a common goal. Through their work coordination and operational excellence, Akshaya Patra ensures that every meal reaches children on time, every day. The success of this large-scale school feeding initiative demonstrates how an NGO can combine innovation, technology, people and processes to create a sustainable impact.
The following are the steps involved in implementing MDM:
The kitchen team strictly follows personal hygiene and food safety protocols. To ensure meal quality, the organisation follows Critical Control Points (CCPs) such as checking cooking temperature and recording it at periodic intervals. All the kitchens follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), which are standard rules for maintaining food quality and safety. Monthly audits and surprise inspections are conducted to check whether these standards are being followed. Kitchens certified under ISO 22000 undergo internal audits twice a year. An external certification organisation also inspects the kitchens twice a year.
Post-cooking procedures include safe handling, hygienic packaging and loading meals into specially designed containers that help retain temperature and freshness during transportation. They also employ route optimisation, GPS tracking for real time monitoring and timely delivery of meals.
Today, 2.35 million children receive warm, nutritious mid-day meals every day through Akshaya Patra’s School Feeding Programme.
Every meal is the result of meticulous planning and shared commitment to support children’s education. Many supporters choose to donate online and contribute to this cause. For those who wish to contribute to society, supporting the Mid-Day Meal Scheme is a transformative opportunity that has proven to deliver significant social impact.
